My television debut. Maybe.

Omigosh, it's November already, and I am so far behind on Christmas crafts! (I furiously crocheted a dishcloth while waiting for the video to upload.) I've been so busy with other things, I don't have a lot to show for this week. The wool/angora yarn I have been plying is finished. I love the way it turned out! Angora always has such a wonderful halo. The yardage was amazing as well. I got over 300 yards of lace-weight 2-ply from, approximately, 2 ounces of fiber.

newly plied skein of wool/angora yarn, pillow and two spins in progress

The pillow has doubled in length, which is good progress. Hopefully I will finish that this week. If not, I'm sure it will be close.

I'm really excited to have the fiber chosen and ready to go for my next spinning project. I'm doing stripes of different colorways from Homestead Hobbyist and Fat Cat Knits, spun as a thick single for the Stormy Weather Vest. There wasn't much beyond that besides a little spinning for my Shetland sweater in spare moments.

The last few weeks, I have hinted at a big project in the works, and I'm ready to share it with you. I was asked to put together some video clips for a Beachbody informercial!

Let's start at the beginning though. Beachbody has what is called, the Beachbody Challenge. You choose which program you want to do, and upon completion, you submit your results. Just for participating you get something, usually a shirt, which corresponds to the program you did. They also give away $500 every day, and by submitting your results, you have a chance to win. From there daily winners have a chance at the monthly prize. There are also quarterly prizes and a huge yearly prize.

I submitted my results after the first round of 21DFX and got my tank top – no big deal. After a few more rounds – and some pretty huge results, my coach suggested I resubmit everything start to finish. I didn't know that was an option, but there wasn't really anything to lose, so I followed her advice. That was October or November of last year. It wasn't until February I received an email saying I was the daily winner! It was so exciting!

Screen grab from the day I won the Beachbody Challenge.

There was a some paperwork to fill out, and during the exchanging of emails, I was told the 21DFX marketing department was interested in my story, and would it be alright if it was passed along. I said sure, and… not a whole lot happened. It popped up on Autumn Calabrese's Facebook page once and the Shakeology blog and Facebook page a couple times, but I hadn't seen anything in a while.

This summer it was announced there would be auditions for a 21DFX infomercial, which was in the works, at Beachbody Coach Summit. I remember thinking it would be a fun thing to do if I were brave enough to go to Summit (which I wasn't). I know of one coach who went to the audition and was called back, which was really cool, and an exciting thing for her.

Summit was back in July, so I figured the cast for the commercial was pretty well sewn up, but a few weeks ago, I got an email out of the blue. It was asking if I would be willing to submit for the project!

Some of the "before" pictures I submitted.
It ended up being a lot more work than I expected, but it was really fun, and it forced me to deal with the ongoing nightmare that has been storage space on my phone. I don't know how much of my stuff, if any, will be used. Even crazier, I probably won't even see it! We don't have regular TV. But if you have the TV on late one night, and an infomercial for 21 Day Fix Extreme comes on, look for a familiar face, and if you see me, let me know!

Evergreen asymmetry

This is a chart I've been meaning to get to for a while. The Christmas before last, I was making a whole bunch of Christmas ornament gift toppers . I wanted each to be unique, so some of the miniature sweaters were adorned with duplicate stitch in traditional knit motifs. I hit a snag with the tree. A row of perfect triangle trees is cute. A single triangle tree is not so cute. A chart for a small tree is not hard to find. One which is not symmetrical is. Enter the sketch pad. My goal was a scraggly tree, which was small, but was still recognizable as a tree. This is the result. As a matter of personal preference, I think this looks best when the chart is turned upside down and is used on a piece being worked from the top. That way, the top of the tree comes to a nice point.

Little bits of cozy

As snow settles in, I find joy in the small things that make life a little bit more cozy and sweet, two of which I'd like to share. The first is a recipe for an almost instant brownie. Spoiler alert: I knit these stocking ornaments as gift toppers this year. But even if you weren't on my gift list, you won't be left out. The pattern is now available for all, free on ravelry. I used to keep my cupboard stocked with microwavable, mini brownie bowls, for emergencies, but lately they've been hard to find. There was a packet of instant hot chocolate on the counter which gave me an idea. What if I could just make a brownie with that? A quick google search revealed several recipes for almost-instant, single serving brownies. All were basically the same: flour, sugar, cocoa, salt, oil, water and vanilla; all with similar proportions of each. I figured instant hot chocolate was basically the sugar and cocoa pre-mixed. Another quick google search proved my hypothesis p...

Leopard print mittens, because I can

My favorite columnist, Mark Steyn , has a bit of advice proffered when speaking to classes of aspiring writers. He tells them, in addition to becoming writers, they should aspire to do something else as well. What doesn't really matter, as long as they do something. It's been a while since I've read the column, but the gist is, it's a more fulfilling and useful life when one is capable of actually doing something beyond thinking about how to write about things being done. I would agree, capability is a wonderful thing. I've been surrounded by capable people my entire life. Need something built? The boards are in the shed; nails or screws? Need to replace a faulty light switch? I know a guy. Need something turned on a lathe? I know a guy — or three. Have a craving for handcrafted candy? Well, there is a secret family recipe for that. Just stand at the stove for a few hours, stirring to soft-ball stage. Being surrounded by so many people better at everything can b...
